Born in 1947 in Middlesex, Alan Lee became
interested in myths and fairytales early.
He attended Ealing School of Art to study
graphic design and during his time there
concentrated on the depiction of Celtic
and Norse myths.
When he graduated in 1979, he went straight
into freelance illustration. Three years
later, in collaboration with his friend
Brian Froud, he illustrated "Faeries."
He eventually illustrated the collection
of Welsh legends called "The Mabinogion."
One of his greatest achievements was the
illustration of the centenary edition of
"The Lord of the Rings" for which he
produced fifty paintings.
Besides earlier illustrations, he
illustrated "Tolkiens Ring," "The
Wanderings of Odysseus" and "The Hobbit."
All of the works below were collected
in public domain but are © of Alan Lee
and originals are exhibited at
The University of Sweden.
