Wolves, long considered to be eternally wise
and mystical.....So now you're at least more
aware of their plight. Can we not find a
better way to co-exist? Go back and look
at ALDO LEOPOLDS' "Thinking
Like a Mountain." Read his poignant expression
of what the "mountain" feels in regards to
deer....wolves....man....

Our ancestors both feared and revered these
creatures....El Lobo. Because of Brother
Wolf's ability to go where he pleased, he
was admired by man. Man, because of his
frail defenses and poor eyesight, cringed
by the fire in his cave. Because of this,
as is natural when man's abilities are
limited and in question...is this then
the reason we have instinctively almost
annilated these magnificent creatures?

El Lobo...Wolf...survival is inbred.
His family...the pack, is always his
primary thought. This used to be
man's primary thought....
The wolf must survive and to survive
he must breed. He has to outthink his
prey, outwit his enemies and help his
young survive. He fears no other
animal....only man. Man... who culls the
best of the herd when hunting, not the
most useless like Brother Wolf does.

Man... who wants to annilate all competitors
for game, who over-hunts those few wild
areas still left with game. Is it any
wonder El Lobo then at times is forced
to take down his competitors livestock?
What option is left for him to care for
his young?

The eyes in the night are filled
with the gentle light of understanding.
With a dignity and courage that has
spanned the world and the ages
they travel through their daily lives
caring for their young and each other,
doing harm to no one, asking only
to be left with some part of their world
intact for the next generation of young ones
so the old may end their time here in peace
without fear of the hunters' guns.

What do we then tell our grandchildren who
trust us to make their world a better
place why man has almost single-handedly
eradicated this glorious creature from
whom so much could be learned?

"In l944, Stanley Young concluded his section
of "The Wolves of North America (1944: 385) with
the statement that "there still remain, even in the
United States, some areas of considerable size
in which we feel that both the red and gray
species, in their respective habitats, may be
allowed to continue their existence with
little molestation." Since that time those
remaining areas have shrunk considerably, and
so has the wolf population.

At present, wolves in the United States,
excluding Alaska, are confined to wilderness
areas where there is little conflict with livestock
interests. Therefore, there appears to be no
valid reason that these interesting animals
cannot be allowed to continue living their lives
in these areas much as they have for millions
of years. The same is true for certain primitive
areas of Alaska, Canada, Europe and Asia.
Whether or not wolves are permitted
to survive in these areas depends completely
on the attitudes of the public.

Unfortunately there still exists in certain segments
of human society an attitude that any animal
(except man) that kills another is a murderer.
To these people, the wolf is a most undesirable creature.
"They're all dirty killers," is the way
one Minnesota state representative expressed
this attitude.
Once blinded emotionally by such hate, the
antiwolf people fail to see that the wolf has no
choice about the way it lives; that it cannot thrive
on grass or twigs any more than man can. To
them the wolf pack is a cowardly assemblage of
wanton slayers, the animal's howl a bloodcurdling
condemnation of all innocent big game in the
country.

These people cannot be changed. If the wolf is
to survive, the wolf haters must be outnumbered.
They must be outshouted, outfinanced and
outvoted. Their narrow biased attitude must be
outweighed by an attitude based on understanding
of natural processes. Finally their hate must be
outdone by a love for the whole of nature, for the
unspoiled wilderness, and for the wolf as a
beautiful, interesting, and integral part of both."
