Big Thunder (Bedagi)
late 19th Century Algonquin
Give us heart to understand never
to take from creation beauty more
than we give.
Never to destroy her for furtherance
of greed.
Never to give our hand to not
building earth's beauty.
Never take from her what we cannot use.
Give us heart to understand that to destroy earth is
to confuse creation.
To wreck her appearance is to blind us to beauty.
That to callously pollute her fragrance is to make
a house of stench.
That as we care for her, she cares for us.
Don't forget who you are.
In seeking only our own security, we have exploited
simply for our own needs.
We have disorted our knowledge; we have abused
our gifts from her and Creator Great Spirit whose
lands thirst.
Help us to find the way to refresh the lands
Great Spirit, whose waters are choked with debris.
Help us to find the way to cleanse your waters
Great Spirit, whose beauty grows ugly with misuse.
Help us to find the way to restore your handiwork
Great Spirit, whose creatures are being destroyed.
Help us find a way to replenish them Great Spirit,
whose gifts to us are being lost in selfishness
and corruption.
Help us to find a way to restore balance and
humanity Oh Great Spirit, whose voice I hear on the wind.
The giver of all life lead with wisdom and strength,
so I may help restore that which we lost.
