"Dakota Prince Deer" by Michael Sieve

One time Wolf and Mountain Lion were camped
together. They were both very great deer
hunters, but they did not know which one was
the best hunter. This day they decided to see
who was the most successful hunter. They both
started out when it got dark in the evening, each
going in a different direction.

Wolf hunted all night long, and finally killed
one deer. He brought it back to camp. Pretty
soon Mountain Lion came in with a deer also.
Mountain Lion had hunted almost all night, too,
but traveled a great way, as had Wolf. Mountain
lion said to Wolf, "You wear your claws off
when you hunt because you run so much." Then
Wolf said to Mountain Lion, "You wear all the
fur off your elbows and legs the way you hunt,
because you crawl along so much."
